A huge blue sheet of water, green palm trees, golden beach. A tropical paradise – in the middle of Europe, in little Switzerland. A paradise for Connyland’s dolphins.
The new dolphin world in Connyland: a giant undertaking. The six meter deep basin holds 13 million liters and is 81 meters long and 35 meters wide. Almost 20,000 cubic meters of earth were moved to make room for it; 3.5 km of filter pipes, 9.3 km of power cables and 1.5 km of water pipes were laid into the ground. It took one year to build, at a cost of more than 1.5 million Swiss Francs.
A dream come true, not only for the dolphins but also for the people: wildlife up close and personal. A fascinating experience, a one of a kind example of species-specific animal keeping, and an investment in to the future of these beautiful animals. The dolphins in Connyland are used to living in the lagoon, but not to life in the wild.
Re-introducing them to the wild would be like abandoning them.
One of the key aspects to achieving a protected living space, as identical to dolphins’ natural habitat as possible, is the size of the lagoon.
In the wild, it’s humans who jeopardize the dolphin’s habitat; in Connyland, it’s humans who protect this habitat.
Everybody who experiences these fascinating animals in their new environment and feels their joy for life, will understand the importance of protecting their natural environment as well.
