Dolphins

The following statistics are from the European Study Book of Dolphins written in 1998, which 30 parks from 11 countries contributed to.

In Europe, there are 179 dolphins in captivity.

63 of these were born in captivity.

51.4% of all male dolphins in Europe are born in captivity.

24.8% of all female dolphins in Europe are born in captivity.

Europe’s oldest female dolphin is 37 years old

Europe’s oldest male dolphin is 41 years old

In all European aquariums combined, 17 animals are older than 30 years.

These numbers contradict the thesis that dolphins in captivity don’t live as long as their relatives in the wild.
